Abbreviated teaching statement:
As an educator in linguistics, I aim to use real-word language data to engage students with the course content and apply what they have learned to collaboratively analyze increasingly complex linguistic patterns grounded in empirical analyses and previous knowledge. Along the way, I strive to develop their problem-solving and research skills so that they feel comfortable exploring their own empirical and theoretically motivated questions. I aim to promote educational equity by delivering and recapitulating the subject matter in several mediums, meeting with students one-on-one outside of class, as well as working closely with tutoring, accessibility, technology, and other campus services. Furthermore, I have found that honoring the linguistic diversity that each student brings to class helps students feel comfortable to express themselves and engage more with their peers. Also, by incorporating subject matter about linguistic variation into course content, students have opportunities to discuss sociolinguistic perspectives that disadvantage underrepresented and marginalized communities and what we can do to counter them.​​
